The new year is a natural time for reflection and goal-setting—and no group of professionals needs it more than educators. Whether you’re a teacher looking to bring more joy into your classroom or an administrator striving to create a thriving school environment, these resolutions are designed to inspire and empower you to make this your best year yet.
Joy is contagious, and one of the best ways to connect with your students is by sharing in their laughter. Too often, we focus on creating fun for our students, but the real magic happens when we join them. Whether it’s jumping into a GoNoodle dance, playing a quick soccer game, or crafting alongside your students, these shared moments of laughter build trust, strengthen relationships, and make your classroom a happier place for everyone.
Professional development doesn’t have to mean endless workshops and PowerPoint presentations. Growth can come from connecting with an inspiring mentor, following great teachers on Instagram, reading a practical teaching guide, or brainstorming with your colleagues.
Looking for the perfect way to start? Rooted in Joy is packed with strategies and inspiration to help you navigate challenges and create a joyful classroom.

Let’s face it: if you don’t prioritize your well-being, burnout is inevitable. Create an intentional weekly self-care routine and treat it like any other important appointment. Not sure where to start? Here are a few ideas:
Remember, self-care isn’t selfish—it’s necessary.
While classroom observations are a staple of school leadership, guest teaching is a powerful way to connect with students, stay sharp, and support your teachers. Block out an hour a week—or even 30 minutes twice a week—to teach in a classroom. Not only will it deepen your relationships with students, but it also shows teachers you’re invested in their success.
Remember why you became an administrator: to make meaningful changes in education. This year, pick one big goal to focus on. Whether it’s securing funds for additional staff, implementing monthly self-care days for teachers, or advocating for smaller class sizes, choose a project you can tackle head-on and see through to completion.
Do you have a clear picture of your school’s climate? From teacher morale to family satisfaction, effective communication is key. If your current methods aren’t cutting it, try implementing:
These small but impactful strategies help you stay connected to your school community and ensure your decisions reflect their needs.

Dr. Deonna Smith is an advocate for educational justice, teacher and abolitionist. Born and raised in Spokane, Washington, Deonna grew up navigating a system that was built to suppress and marginalize Black and Brown kids. Deonna’s passion for justice began early, as the only student of color in most places, and a first generation college student, Deonna experienced firsthand the corrosive nature of systemic racism. After completing her undergraduate degree Deonna sought to be the Black teacher she never had. Years in the classroom exposed just how deep the roots of systemic racism ran. Having a Black teacher wasn’t enough if you were working at a school that refused to confront racism, inequity and bias. As a teacher, Deonna saw how systemic racism impacted her students. As an administrator, she saw how it impacted her school and even the community.
